Best start to Utah’s Alta Ski Area in decades

Grab your powder skis and join Alta on Friday 18 November to celebrate their opening day for their 85th ski season.

The ski area has received 101” in the last three weeks and a base depth of 50”. Lift-served skiing on opening weekend will include Collins, Wildcat and Sugarloaf lifts—providing more terrain for Opening Day than in the last few decades. Check the Lift and Terrain Status page for projected terrain openings as they kick-off Alta’s 85th season.

Alta is a mecca for exceptional deep snow and is a skier only mountain. The ski area has been independently owned and operated for 85 years and is easily and quickly accessible from Salt Lake City International Airport. (See overview and trail map here on SnowNews website)

Information for the Alta season and opening day.

Limited Beginner Terrain

Alta is replacing the old Sunnyside triple-chair with a new six-person detachable lift. Global supply chain issues have delayed the delivery and installation of key elements of the new Sunnyside lift. Unfortunately, the Sunnyside lift will not be finished until mid-or late-December. In addition, the Albion lift will not run for the first few weeks of the season due to the construction of the nearby Sunnyside lift. For the first few weeks of the season, Alta skiers will have limited access to beginner terrain which will be confined to rope tows and the Snowpine lift.

On-Mountain Improvements

The new six-pack Sunnyside lift remains under construction. Once the Sunnyside lift is further along in construction, the Albion lift will begin spinning. Other improvements include the installation of Wyssen towers on Mount Baldy for avalanche mitigation. These remote explosive devices (RAC’S) will allow for safer and more efficient openings in Ballroom, East Baldy, EBT, Baldy chutes, Main Street, Harold’s, Tombstone and Baldy shoulder. Off of the Supreme lift, terrain Improvements were made to Sleepy Hollow area to improve the skiing experience.

Alta Environmental Center

Sustainability efforts and events kept the Alta Environmental Center busy this summer. Alta employee's planted 1,344 native plant seedlings during two employee conservation days. In addition, AEC hosted over 20 volunteer stewardship and environmental education events in collaboration with various partners. These events provide educational and land conservation work opportunities for the public. Approximately 9,000 wildflowers and shrubs and 350 tree seedlings were planted where restoration and reforestation efforts were needed at Alta. To date, 19.8 tons of food has been diverted from the landfill at Alta.

Alta accepts both the IKON Pass and the Mountain Collective Pass. For the 2022-23 ski season, Alta moved off the IKON base pass and will accept IKON Pass and the IKON Base Plus Pass.

"With a 538" snowfall average and over 100" so far, we're beyond enthusiastic about getting face shots on opening day. It's going to be a tremendous 85th season,"
