Winter is not going down without a fight at Mt Buller! 60cms of fresh snow has been recorded since Wednesday and the resort is a deep mid-winter wonderland despite the calendar marking the official start of spring on Monday.
Mt Buller’s mountain operations crew were putting in long hours to safely open terrain and de-ice lifts as the storm created deep snow drifts and ice build across the mountain. The Summit lift was placed on standby for several days while the peak of storm passed through. A team of 6 dug for hours through heavy and deep snow and ice to clear and open the lift to the delight of skiers this afternoon.
Skiers and snowboarders are revelling in the superb conditions with powdery fresh snow and cold temperatures as the average snow depth in the ski area has climbed up the gauge to between 86-123cms.
“It feels like Christmas for skiers and snowboarders here this weekend,” said resort spokesperson Rhylla Morgan.
“The storm has settled in since Wednesday and dumped across the resort with the perfect combination of moisture and cold air delivering snow by the bucketload.”
Perfect storm for Jakara Anthony celebration and ABOM Mogul Challenge this past weekend.
Mt Buller looked like a winter postcard as the resort community celebrated gold-medallist, resort ambassador and favourite local mogul skiing champion Jakara Anthony in a special ceremony to rename the mogul course in her honour on Saturday.
“A big thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey and continues to support me along the way. It means the world and thank you so much for the honor of having this course named after me,” Jakara said.
The legendary ABOM Mogul Challenge was held on the freshly named Jakara Anthony Mogul Course on Saturday afternoon, stretching into the night under lights.
An enthusiastic crowd lined the course cheering on the world-class line up of athletes from across Europe, Asia and Australia who impressed with fast and stylish performances as this much-loved event made a welcome comeback following a hiatus since 2022.
Jakara secured 2nd place on her home mountain, frustratingly unable to make her second run due to fog rolling in and halting the event before the final runs, with scores tallied from qualifications.
Avital Carroll (Austria) took top of the podium for the women while Oliver Logan (Australia) took top honours for the men, just ahead of Matt Graham.
