Bev making most of Hotham’s magical cross country season

It’s been a dream start to the 2025 snow season at Mt Hotham, and no one is more thrilled than local cross country skiing legend Bev Lawrence.

With over 50 years of experience on Hotham’s trails, Bev has seen it all, and she says this year is something special.

“We didn’t even have grooming until the 30th of June last year,” Bev recalls.

“This year, we had two trails groomed by the 10th of June, plus the trail to Dinner Plain...it’s quite remarkable.”

The snow has been consistent and generous, creating ideal conditions for cross country (XC) skiing.

The trails are alive with a diverse mix of skiers, from school groups and first-timers to seasoned seniors and energetic young guns.

Many are drawn to XC skiing for its peaceful alternative to the hustle and bustle of the downhill slopes.

“There’s just nothing like it,” Bev says.

“The peace, the quiet, being out in the bush in the middle of winter.

"Every day the landscape changes.

"You might see wombat tracks or catch a glimpse of wildlife when you least expect it.

"Some of my favourite ski days have been in the rain, there’s something incredible about being immersed in the elements.”

XC skiing offers a unique blend of adventure and serenity.

It can be fast and exhilarating or slow and meditative, whatever pace suits you.

It’s also a great option on windy days, as the trails are often more sheltered than the alpine slopes.

For those new to the sport, Bev recommends taking a lesson.

“It can be frustrating if you don’t learn how to balance properly," she says.

"A lesson will set you on the right path and make it much more rewarding.”

XC skiing lessons and tours can be booked through the Hotham website.

The new Hotham Snowplay Hub at Wire Plain has made the experience even more welcoming.

Skiers can warm up with a hot drink before heading out, and the trail to Dinner Plain offers a perfect destination ski where you can have a lovely lunch stop, then ski back to Wire Plain (or catch the bus, just don’t forget your ticket!).

XC skiing is also a budget-friendly way for families to enjoy the snow.

The gear is lighter, the clothing more comfortable, and the experience deeply immersive.

Whether you’re skiing solo or with friends, it’s a refreshing way to connect with the mountain.

“You’re not racing the environment,” Bev explains.

“You’re immersed in it.

"You can really get lost in the trails and in the moment.

"It’s a totally different kind of buzz.”

When an even gentler rhythm is preferred, snowshoeing offers a similarly peaceful way to explore the alpine landscape.

It’s ideal for those who prefer walking to gliding, is easy to pick up, and it allows access to many of the same serene bushland trails.

For those looking for a bit of friendly competition, the iconic Pub to Pub Ski Race is back on Saturday, 2 August, thanks to the Australian Alpine Club (AAC) Dinner Plain.

This beloved event invites skiers of all abilities to race, or cruise, from pub to pub in a celebration of community and snow sports.

Tickets are just $25 for adults and $10 for under-18s, available on the Hotham website.

Whether you're a seasoned skier or a curious first-timer, there’s never been a better time to try cross-country skiing at Mt Hotham.

With pristine trails, a welcoming community, and a truly magical atmosphere, it’s an experience that stays with you long after the snow melts.

As Bev puts it, “It’s a whole new way to experience the mountain, and it’s absolutely magical.”
