A taste of Mt Hotham in spring

Spring at Mt Hotham is a season of soft snow, long afternoons, and spontaneous detours, on and off the slopes.

With the sun hanging around a little longer and the mountain mellowing out, it’s the perfect time to explore Hotham’s food scene, which is as varied and vibrant as the terrain itself.

A few laps on the slopes, a coffee break in the sun, a cheeky jump or two, followed by a long lunch, a village lap, and then settling in for après on a sun-drenched deck.

As the sun dips below the horizon, a mountain-top dinner rounds out the perfect day.

And tomorrow? You do it all again.

Start your day with a warm brew and a bite at one of Hotham’s beloved cafés.

Chill Bar & Café keeps it simple with a coffee served alongside a chocolate freckle and a sausage roll that’s earned its place as a local staple.

Over at the newly revamped The Bird Café, the menu has had a refresh, introducing brand new indulgent waffles, but the well-loved classics remain.

Hoff Hut is a quiet achiever, known for its Harrietville-sourced quiches and pies that have become a bit of a cult favourite among regulars.

And in the new Snowplay Hub at Wire Plain, Hotham Hub Café offers toasties, pies, and a custom coffee blend from Big Muster Distilling Company, ideal for a mid-morning recharge with the kids.

When the midday hunger hits, there’s no shortage of options.

Snake Gully Hut offers quick bites whilst staying close to the slopes, with live DJs most weekends from 2–4pm and an iconic ‘a tinny and a dimmy’ deal.

If you’re testing your skills at the new Big D Terrain Park, Frankie Café is your go-to for burgers, fish and chips, and donuts that are almost too pretty to eat.

For something fast and satisfying, Hot Doggies serves up classic hot dogs, wraps, and if you’re into trying something unique, their inventive fusion snack “dimmy dog” is for you.

For something different, Wabi Sabi introduces izakaya-style ramen to the mountain.

Their Wabi Hour, held Wednesdays and Sundays from 2–4pm, features great specials and open DJ decks, all in their Japanese-inspired interior.

As the day winds down, Hotham’s après scene comes alive.

The Hotham Hotel runs daily jug specials from 4–6pm and offers a snack deal with 10 hot honey fried mozzarella sticks for just $10.

Zirkys is buzzing with live music and Friday happy hours, perfect for soaking up the last rays of sun on their sun-soaked deck.

The General remains a go-to for social afternoons, with jugs, games of pool or darts, and both front and back decks to choose from.

And don’t miss Jack Frost, where the 3:30pm-5:30pm slot means 2-for-1 cocktails and their famous $1 wings - ideal for winding down in style.

Dinner at Mt Hotham is where the magic really happens.

For a truly unique experience, head to ANE, nestled in Hotham’s hidden eco-village.

Here, a giant tipi, cosy fire, mulled wine, and a cheese fondue feast create an unforgettable alpine evening.

Arlberg offers a family-friendly vibe with fresh-made pizzas on homemade bases, and daily specials starting at just $22.

And for those with a serious appetite, Sir Loins delivers steaks cooked to perfection and share-worthy plates.

If you’re feeling bold, tackle the 1kg+ tomahawk steak with a mate.

Spring is when Hotham slows down just enough to explore everything it has to offer - fewer crowds, longer days, and plenty of time to discover new favourites.
