Hoppet remains ultimate challenge

By KATERINA PAUL

WHILE winter is just beginning, it’s never too early to start thinking about one of the biggest highlights of the Australian cross-country skiing calendar - the Kangaroo Hoppet, returning to Falls Creek on Saturday, 23 August this season.

Held annually on the fourth Saturday in August, the Hoppet is much more than a ski race, it’s a celebration of our XC community.

Each year, more than 1000 skiers of all levels and nationalities gather at Falls Creek to take part.

From first timers and recreational skiers to Olympians and Worldloppet masters, the Hoppet is where the entire spectrum of cross-country skiing comes together.

At the heart of the event is the 42km Kangaroo Hoppet, Australia’s premier ski marathon and a member of the Worldloppet international series and a Ski Classic Challenger. It's a serious challenge for many, and a bucket-list achievement for others.

Whether you’re racing for a result or simply aiming to complete the distance, the atmosphere is always one of shared support and celebration and always something to look forward to.

But you don’t need to ski 42km to be part of the Hoppet.

The 21km Australian Birkebeiner and 7km Joey Hoppet offer more accessible distances for skiers of all ages and abilities.

These shorter races create a welcoming and fun environment for families, new skiers, and anyone looking to experience the excitement of being part of a major international skiing event, right here in Australia.

Early bird entries are now open for the 42km event, with adult entry priced at $90 until 12 July.

After that, entry fees increase, so it’s worth locking in your spot early.

Don’t leave it until the last minute!

While the past two years saw cancellations due to poor snow conditions, optimism is high for 2025.

The Hoppet holds a special place in the heart of Australian skiing, and its return would be a welcome boost to both the sport and the mountain community.

Whether you're training for the full 42km, planning to cruise the 7km, or just want to get up to the Nordic Bowl to support your friends and family, mark the date.

The Kangaroo Hoppet is back, and it’s time to start getting excited.

If you are not a racer but would like to get involved the Hoppet is always looking for volunteers for preparation, during and post-race support.

Visit Hoppet.com.au for more information or lock in your entry with an early bird price.
