Legends, lifts & launches: Falls Creek’s big winter kickoff

OPENING Weekend at Falls Creek is all about shaking off the summer dust, reuniting with lodge mates, and setting the tone for the season ahead.

Snow or no snow, there’s a full weekend of action and celebration waiting up here in the high country.

And the biggest headline? Cloud 9 is better than ever!

After years of planning, hard work, and plenty of anticipation, the on-mountain favourite has officially revealed its full renovations.

With a brand-new layout, upgraded facilities, and smoother flow, Cloud 9 is now the jewel in the crown of on-piste dining and après in the southern hemisphere.

Huge credit to the Traverse Alpine Group, Falls Creek Ski Lifts, and the incredible trades, especially Duggan and Hanlon, for making it happen.

While skiing and boarding depend on snow conditions, off-piste fun is guaranteed across the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Scenic chairlift rides up Halley’s Comet will be running, offering sweeping views and a fresh taste of alpine magic.

Down in Slalom Plaza, retail favourites are ready to welcome you back.

Explore The Board Lounge, Falls Creek’s dedicated on-mountain snowboard store, or step into I Dream of Snow - the country’s only vintage ski boutique.

Then browse luxe après wear and alpine homewares at Rapunzel’s.

Don’t forget to drop by Yogi’s Ski & Snowboard Hire, a proudly family-owned business that’s been fitting boots and supporting the Falls Creek community for 47 years.

Early season is the perfect time to get your setup sorted with their expert boot fitters.

Families will love the free kids’ activities and marshmallow toasting in the Village Bowl on Saturday - an ideal warm-up to the weekend’s main event.

That’s when things really fire up.

From 6:30pm, fireworks will light up the sky above the Village Bowl in a dazzling alpine display.

Sunday brings a heartfelt highlight with the inaugural Falls Creek Legends Lunch, hosted by Traverse Alpine Group in partnership with the Falls Creek Museum.

Running from 12pm to 4pm at Frying Pan Inn, the event celebrates the founders and long-time legends who helped shape Falls Creek into the village it is today.

Guests are encouraged to wear their best retro ski gear and join the fun with a fashion parade hosted by I Dream of Snow.

Expect great food, lively conversation, and a raffle raising funds for the Falls Creek Museum.

Tickets are $48 and include all food, with drinks available at the bar.

The long weekend winds down gently on Monday, with more scenic lift rides, retail therapy, and family fun.

So, whether you’re here for the legends, the fireworks, the renovated Cloud 9, or just a mulled wine and a wander through the village, Opening Weekend 2025 promises to be one to remember.
