Cruel lockdown for snow industry

THE Victorian snow industry has been dealt another cruel blow with the snap five day lockdown by the Victorian government seeing all resort lifts closed for the next 5 days. The lockdown will occur until midnight Tuesday July 20.

After the 2020 season was a total right off, and with various other lockdowns restricting travel in the past year, all businesses associated with the alpine region and their flow on effect would have been welcoming this snow season proceeding without incident.

With the arrival of a huge storm about to deposit big snow across all alpine regions, skiers and snowboarders will now have to cancel their holiday for this week.

Even worse, those who live in the resorts will not have use of the lifts and may be lodge bound watching the snowflakes fall.

This combined with the greater Sydney area lockdown for July has seen the overall snow industry take a huge hit on potential profit.

In NSW, the Sydney lockdown has seen the July school holiday visitors cancel by the thousands, and most business refunding huge amounts of money.

Overall, the month of July with now multiple lockdowns would have cost the snow industry hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue across the board.

If there any positives to take out of this situation, it is that this new snow forecast for the next week will set up a great August and September and hopefully everyone can then travel to enjoy the snow and their favourite resorts.

Victorian Government Information

The Victorian Government stated they now have new cases and new exposure sites of this wildly infectious strain of Covid-19.

“We’ve seen this strain before – and you probably already know what we need to do next. Victoria will not wait to act. We know that not much good comes from waiting,” said Premier Dan Andrews.

“Waiting could see more people infected and the number of exposure sites explode.”

“If we act now – while we’re right on the heels of this outbreak – we can give ourselves every chance of getting ahead of it.

“If we wait – we lose that option.”

Restrictions mean people can only leave home to get the food and the supplies you need, for exercise for up to two hours and no more than 5kms from your home, for care or caregiving, work or education if you can’t do it from home or to get vaccinated at the nearest possible location.

“If you were an authorised worker during the last lockdown, you’ll be an authorised worker this time around. Everyone else must work from home.”

“Last night we announced that face masks must be worn indoors at all times (except at home) and outdoors when it’s not possible to physically distance.”

Under this announcement, face masks must also be worn outdoors at all times.

“For those that have returned from a red zone on a permit – you must follow the requirements of your permit.”

“That means going straight home to quarantine for 14 days and only leaving to get tested.

“And we must be clear. Quarantining means staying at home.”
