Service your trailers and watch those cans

VISITORS have been flocking to town over the festive season, enjoying all the region has to offer after being largely unable to visit the area over the past two years.

The High Country's lakes, mountain trails, retailers and camp spots have all been receiving a workout, with estimates on visitor numbers into the New Year reaching six figures.

Locals have surely seen the influx while trying to grab a parking spot down the main street.

Sergeant Marty McLachlan from Mansfield Highway Patrol confirmed it's been a busy time.

"It has been an exceptionally busy Christmas," he said.

"The entire school holiday period, really, and I think many people are making up for last the couple of years."

Amidst the festivities and high flow of traffic local police have observed a couple of trends.

"A lot of people towing their trailers; be it watercraft, caravans, or a camper trailer, and one thing we're encountering frequently is trailers not being maintained," said Sergeant McLachlan.

"These trailers have been sitting there a year or two, not being used, but also not being maintained, with wheel bearings not checked and in poor condition.

"So we're seeing issues: breakdowns and collisions, something which is unique to this time of year."

Another trend local police have observed, with no real rhyme or reason as to why, is an increase in drink driving offending, while drug driving – which has previously been an issue at this time of year – has waned.

"We've seen a bit of a spike in drink driving offences, as opposed to drug driving, which hasn't been so prevalent this year," said Sergeant McLachlan.

"So that seems to be reemerging as a problem without any noticeable pattern or reason why."

Sergeant McLachlan theorised that off the back of COVID and the current increase in cost of living, many people have been visiting not only for a break, but possibly for a final use of their luxury items before potentially selling them off as the financial belt tightens.

"With more imminent interest rate rises, people want to use their toys before they have to get rid of them," said Sergeant McLachlan.

"When it comes down to either selling your house or your toys, the toys are going to go, so some people are certainly up here for a bit of a last hurrah."

CIL insurance, Australia's leading caravan and RV insurer, recently covered a number of safety tips for recreationalists to consider.

"Caravans can be subjected to harsh weather conditions, including the heat and high winds," a spokesperson said.

"No matter how careful we tow, our caravans will experience wear and tear on our search for adventures.

"Sun, rain, general use and road conditions all play a role.

"That's why regular servicing is so important for our comfort and safety, not just when we're towing but when we're camping as well."

"Your trailer should be serviced every 10,000 kms or annually.

"Windows and seals need to be checked, tires replaced, and wheel bearings inspected," the spokesperson concluded.
