Falls Creek’s striking new art installation was publicly launched and celebrated over the King’s Birthday opening weekend.
Minister for Regional Development Michaela Settle said the Flower of the Alpine Sun golden orb fine art sculpture was delivered in partnership with Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) as part of the Victorian government’s $10 million Alpine Business Support Package.
The sculpture was designed by internationally recognised artist Gio Veronesi and constructed in Ballarat.
It is located across from Halley’s Comet chairlift and the Cloud 9 Restaurant and serves as a viewing platform.
Minister Settle said it is the only significant fine art piece in the Australian Alps and one of the most unique in regional Australia.
She said the government’s Alpine Business Support Package has supported several projects across the region.
At Falls Creek, this included the creation of a downhill mountain bike trail and lakeside water attractions, as well as a winter play area for snow lovers – complete with snow-making units and a magic carpet lift.
It also funded the three-day summer event ‘Feastival’ and the Festival of Light.
These events welcomed visitors back to the resort in 2022 with audio-visual displays that celebrated the 75th anniversary of Falls Creek.
Minister Settle said the Alpine Business Support Package is part of Labor’s record investment of more than $50 billion into rural and regional Victoria in just over a decade.
“Our Alpine region offers something for everyone from extreme sports to spectacular art,” she said
“We will continue to invest in projects that attract visitors and showcase everything the Alpine region has to offer.”
Northern Victoria MP and Treasurer Jaclyn Symes said Falls Creek is one of Victoria’s most iconic tourism destinations, and the striking new artwork will give visitors another reason to stop, explore and experience everything the region has to offer.
ARV Falls Creek general manager Colleen Gwynne said the Flower of the Alpine Sun is a remarkable addition to Falls Creek.
“It gives visitors a new place to pause, take in the scenery and connect with the unique alpine environment...we’re proud to welcome guests with an experience that adds to the resort year-round,” she said.
