The start of it all

LOOKING at the history of the Mt Buller Ski Patrol one person that cannot be forgotten would be Maurice Selle.

Selle was an instructor who was instrumental in establishing Buller’s first local ski patrol in 1949 – which now ties back to the 75th anniversary.

Selle’s request to use the Red Cross emblem on a shoulder ‘flash badge’ for the four Buller patrollers (yes, there were only four in those days), is what kick-started the conversations between the Red Cross and the SCV leading to the development of the larger, more formal side wide patrol system in 1950.

Selle then served as company superintendent of the Mt Buller Patrol for several years as part of the Victorian Red Cross Ski Patrol Corps.

He also worked as manager for The Whitt from 1951 – 1955.

On display at the National Alpine Museum is Maurice Selle’s ski jacket of the 1940s.

The Museum is open from 12noon to 5pm daily and entry is free.
