Telling Pearl’s story: ‘Princess of Hotham’

STEPHEN Whiteside launched his latest book, ‘Pearl Bradshaw - Princess of Hotham’, at the Bright Library on June 7.

The book from the Melbourne-based author and GP follows on from his release last year of ‘Snow, Fire and Gold’, which shared the tumultuous lives of Hotham pioneers Bill Spargo and wife Evelyn Piper.

Stephen said during his research for that book he interviewed Pearl, who with her husband Jim, managed the Hotham Heights Chalet for nine consecutive winters, from 1937 to 1945.

He said his latest book not only tells the story of this remarkable women, but also shines a light on a previously little known, and fascinating, period of Mt Hotham’s history.

The book’s release coincides with centenary of the Hotham Heights Chalet, as Bill Spargo first started taking in paying guests at the chalet during the winter of 1925.
