September is the perfect time to explore the mountains.
With warmer days and firmer mornings, you can enjoy some incredible crust skiing adventures.
Just keep a few tips in mind:
• Start Early: The snow is best before the sun softens it, so aim to head out before 8am. You’ll enjoy faster, firmer tracks and a quieter experience.
• Plan Your Route: A quick map check can save you later. Snow softens quickly in spring, and the return trip may take longer than expected.
• Safety First: Always carry your phone, and if skiing solo, let someone know your plan. Save the Falls Creek Ski Patrol number (03) 5758 3502 or Mount Hotham Ski Patrol’s number (03) 5759 4038 just in case.
• Stay Fueled: Warmer temps mean more sweat. Pack a drink belt or Camelpack with water and electrolytes, plus a few snacks like nuts, bars or chocolate to keep your energy steady.
• Sun Protection: Spring sunshine is strong. Pack sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses that wrap around. A cap can help keep the glare off your face and eyes.
Australian National XC Championships recap
Falls Creek hosted the Australian National Championships on 16/17 August, providing a final tune-up before the Kangaroo Hoppet.
Saturday’s classic sprint was held in tricky, snowy conditions, while Sunday brought sunshine and firmer tracks for the freestyle races.
Rosie Fordham dominated the women’s events, winning both the sprint and the 10 km freestyle.
“It was great to be back home racing with the rest of the Australian XC community,” she said.
“This will be my first Hoppet and I’ve heard great things about the event so I’m excited to get around it for the first time.”
Seve De Campo was equally impressive, claiming double victories in the men’s races ahead of Phillip Bellingham and Jayden Spring.
“These AUS champs at Falls Creek came with some intense racing,” he said.
“I was super happy to come away with the two wins and with the level being high it made for great racing experience as we prepare for the upcoming season.”
Australia’s Para Nordic athletes also delivered strong performances across both sprint and distance events as they prepare for the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games in Milano. Dave Miln led the way with victories in both events, with Taryn Dickens and Matthew Brumby also achieving podium results.
While Dickens was unable to compete in the distance race due to illness, the team will travel to Canada later this year to begin their official Paralympic qualification campaign. Their performances at Falls Creek show they are on a promising path as they aim for international success.
Both Fordham and De Campo were crowned overall FIS Continental Cup champions, capping off a strong domestic season before heading into international competition.
