Snow Sports Program opens the slopes to all students

ST MARY'S Primary School, Mansfield Principal Trish Etcell talks about the benefits of the Adams Ski & Golf day donations for student.

“EVERY year we’re amazed by the number of students in Year 3 who have never seen snow, despite living so close to the mountain.

"This program opens the door to a sport and environment that many would never experience otherwise.

"For some families, the snow is unfamiliar territory, and we’re proud to be the ones who introduce their children to it."

The Snow Sports Program is a powerful example of how community support, natural resources, and a commitment to holistic education can come together to create unforgettable and meaningful learning experiences for children.

Nestled at the base of Mt. Buller, St Mary’s Primary School is uniquely positioned to offer students a learning experience unlike any other, right in their backyard.

The Snow Sports Program, which has become a highlight of the school calendar, offers students from Years 3 to 6 the opportunity to develop essential life skills while participating in alpine activities, including skiing and snowboarding.

Students in Years 3 and 4 attend Mt Buller for two days, while Years 5 and 6 spend three full days on the slopes.

Younger students in Prep to Year 2 are not left out, enjoying a snow play experience at Mt Stirling—many for the very first time.

Each day, students participate in two ski or snowboard lessons led by professional Mt. Buller instructors.

"These lessons not only enhance skills but also make the experience safe and structured for all students, regardless of ability," Trish said..

The program is made possible through a combination of school funding and generous community donations. The Mark Adams Golf Day contributes a significant amount to help cover transportation costs—$1,320 per bus trip to Mt Buller.

In 2024, St Mary’s allocated an additional $2,500 from school funds to keep the program accessible to all families. These contributions reduce the cost per student by over $30 per trip, easing the financial burden on families and ensuring no child misses out due to cost.

In 2025, the school received $2,225 through the Adams Golf and Ski Day fund, which supports all participating local schools.

This contribution also covers the cost of two ski lessons per child and all bus trips, ensuring each student receives quality instruction and support during their time on the mountain.

The program is designed not only to foster physical development and outdoor skills, but to nurture the whole child. Through their time on the mountain, students:

• Prepare for winter conditions and develop an awareness of safety and preparedness in the outdoors.

• Improve their flexibility, balance and overall physical fitness.

• Build resilience and self-confidence by stepping outside their comfort zones.

• Strengthen decision-making abilities in unfamiliar situations.

• Learn to work effectively with peers, gaining insight into themselves and their relationships.
