THE snow gods looked down on the Victorian Alps and decided it was time to turn everything white just in time for the opening of the 2025 ski season.
Right on cue mountain folk woke on Saturday (June 7) to a white morning and the snow coming down by the bucketful.
The previous two nights saw mountain snowmakers levelling out the stockpiled man-made snow mounds, grooming and smoothing, particularly on Bourke Street – all under lights creating a magical winter scene.
From then on the opening weekend only got better for skiers and snowboarders as Mt Buller received some 26cms of fresh snow adding to the storm total as at Sunday morning (June 8) and allowing several runs to be opened.
The cold snap crossing the country for the opening arrived with perfect timing for the resort and set the season up for a great start.
“This is a dream start to the snow season,” said spokesperson Rhylla Morgan.
“From the first chairlift on Saturday morning with snow dumping on our guests, to additional terrain opening today (Sunday), the buzz around the mountain is wonderful.”
Mt Buller had skiing and snowboarding on Bourke Street and Baldy with ABOM Express and Bourke Street Express lifts rolling.
Northside Express was carrying sightseers for magical rides up the mountain where visitors were making snowmen and reveling in the fresh conditions.
The Ski & Snowboard School opened with beginner lessons and tobogganing was available in the Village park.
The temperature stayed crisp and did not move above -1C with flurries continuing across the whole weekend.
As Buller News went to press (Tuesday, 24 June) snow showers were expected for this week with a 95 percent chance of rain as well - conditions were cloudy with a very high chance of snow and for Wednesday and more snow estimated between 1 and 15 cm.
The average snow cover was 37 - 45cm with the next snow due today (25 June) and for the remainder of the week.
Nicely groomed runs await visitors and will hold well across the day as temperatures stay low.
Drop a cheeky Barn Park loop into your day on the beginner sized features. Stay tuned for more terrain for the weekend!
Last weekend for the first time Buller celebrated the Winter Solstice – Sat 28 June with a night of fire, light and fun. (See roundup next issue July 4.)
