Hers, then his: Falls Creek women’s ski program so popular it sparked one for the men

IT started with a group of women, a legendary instructor, and a simple idea: to carve out space on the slopes that felt supportive, social, and inspiring.

Years later, that idea, born as the Mim’s Women’s Program, is not only thriving, but has gone on to inspire a men’s equivalent that’s now finding its own rhythm on the mountain.

Named after Mim Sodergren, a pioneering ski instructor who championed women in snowsports, the Falls Creek Mim’s program has become a winter mainstay.

The three-to-five day programs run in July and August, offering all-female coaching for skiers of all levels.

But from the beginning, it was never just about improving technique.

“What sets Mim’s apart from a standard lesson is the sense of connection and community,” says Nikki Evans, Falls Creek Snowsports operations manager.

“The focus goes beyond just technical skills to build confidence and progression in a supportive environment.

"The camaraderie is a huge draw.

"Many return year after year for the friendships as much as the skiing.”

That loyalty and energy didn’t go unnoticed.

“The idea for the Mike’s Men’s Program came about through a mix of influences,” Ms Evans explains.

“Many partners of women participating in Mim’s expressed interest in having their own space to ski, learn, and connect in a similar way.

"At the same time, there was a strong motivation to honour Mike’s legacy.”

Mim and Mike Sodergren were passionate instructors who dedicated their lives to Snowsports education.

Together, they advocated for inclusivity, mentorship and a strong community culture in skiing.

Both tragically lost their lives in the Thredbo landslide in 1997, but their legacy continues through these Falls Creek programs that carry their names.

Rather than copy Mim’s, the Mike’s three-to-five day programs were shaped to reflect their own character, while sharing the same ethos of combining skill-building and on-mountain social experiences.

“The goal was never to replicate Mim’s,” says Ms Evans.

“We wanted to develop something with its own flavour, something that reflected the energy and passion Mike brought to the mountain.”

Now entering its second year, the Mike’s program is steadily growing, drawing returning skiers who, like their Mim’s counterparts, come back not just for instruction, but for camaraderie.

The Mim’s and Mike programs cater to all skier ability levels and combine expert instruction with a welcoming, social atmosphere.
