Falls Creek blanketed in record breaking snow for opening weekend

FALLS Creek launched into the 2025 snow season in spectacular style, with the greatest snowfall ever recorded for the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Guests who arrived Friday night, 6 June woke up to a breathtaking transformation: the entire village blanketed in deep, fresh snow.

Australia’s only true ski-in, ski-out alpine village became an instant snow-covered wonderland, with white-dusted rooftops, snow-lined trails, and frozen alpine views stretching in every direction.

“Opening weekends don’t come like this very often," said Dean De Santis, general manager of Falls Creek Alpine Resort.

"We saw one of the largest early season snowfalls, with deep natural coverage right through the village."

In fact, the snow storm over opening weekend - from Friday evening into Monday - dumped more than 60cms of fresh snow.

Falls Creek was able to officially open its lifts and terrain to skiing and boarding on Sunday, 8 June, with Halley’s Comet chairlift and Mouse Trap carpet spinning from 10am, giving guests access to laps on Wombat’s Ramble, Australia’s longest green run.

Intermediate skiers and snowboarders were thrilled to see Towers Chairlift and Main Street run from 10am the next day.

Together with non-stop snowmaking and grooming, Falls Creek Ski Lifts capitalised on the storm’s incredible conditions and opened more lifts and terrain in the days that followed, with Eagle Express and Drovers Dream running from Friday, 13 June, alongside Halley’s Comet, Towers Quad Chair, and Mouse Trap.

The Gully Chairlift opened on Saturday, 14 June, unlocking Village Bowl access and even more terrain for eager snow lovers.

And the snow magic hasn’t been limited to lift-accessed areas.

The resort, which prides itself as the home of cross country skiing in Australia, had 24kms of groomed trails across its nordic network opened - including signature trails like Aqueduct, Nordic Bowl, and McKay Loop.

In addition, Windy Corner’s toboggan slope was opened free of charge for guest use while the toboggan carpet remained offline.

Opening weekend also saw the grand opening of Cloud 9 Restaurant at the top of Halley’s Comet Chairlift, with it’s new enclosed outdoor dining area with spectacular views across the Great Dividing Range and Spion Kopje.

Richard Phillips, vice president and general manager of Falls Creek Ski Lifts, said the company and its dedicated staff were proud to kick off the season with such strong momentum and to share it with everyone who calls Falls Creek home - whether for a weekend or a lifetime.

“Falls Creek is more than just a ski resort; it’s a community," he said.

"Every snowflake, every chairlift ride, and every smiling face on the slopes is part of something bigger.

"Falls Creek welcomes you to be part of our alpine family this winter.”
