Excellence in quality and service

CHILDHOOD sweethearts Kristie Warren–Smith and Chris Wallis are using their experience in the meat industry to build on the reputation of the well–established Mansfield business, Alpine Butchery, which they took over in 2019.

The couple grew up together in nearby Alexandra, where Chris worked under Kristie's father as his apprentice butcher.

Chris is now head butcher at the Mansfield business and is focused on delivering the best quality product and hands–on customer service possible.

Kristie acknowledges the excellent work done by the previous owners, but the pair hope to expand the business and continue to offer top–notch local produce sourced from the North East area.

They are both passionate about the connection with local producers and customers and most of the beef sold is local grass–fed Black Angus with porterhouse and scotch the favourite cuts.

They also sell chicken, lamb and pork as well as fresh seafood which is sourced from the Melbourne markets.

The business prides itself on offering a diverse range of products ranging from large beef pies, lasagne and curries to vegetarian options.

Three well–stocked display cases in the shop show off the various cuts and meal options to their best advantage and as a butcher, Chris is committed to "zero wastage", so nothing is discarded.

Chris says the product in the display cases is regularly rotated and the freezers are filled with backup stock, including pre–prepared meals.

The business employs a full–time chef responsible for the pre–prepared meals, a major drawcard for customers, as is the smokehouse where all the smallgoods are produced.

Alpine Butchery is more than just a shopfront, with regular deliveries to Melbourne three days a week, free local drop–offs and, during the snow season, three daily deliveries to Mt Buller.

The business also offers a catering menu for special occasions.
