MERTON cricketers move to second on the WDCA B grade ladder after a tight victory over Greta on Saturday.
Playing on a challenging turf wicket at the Greta Rec Reserve Merton made 102 all out in the 33rd over, Ross Mackinnon 46 and returning player James Octigan 16 the top scorers on a lush slow outfield.
Pace bowling was the order of the day making life hard for the top order of both teams as the Greta side found out, led by a top performance from Merton's Jai Mackinnon, taking a career best 5/10 of 8 overs.
The home side found themselves 6/38 at one stage, to recover in the latter overs somewhat to finish their innings at 9/81.
Luke Berriman took two wickets, Benton and Octigan with one each finished an entertaining match.
Merton go into the Christmas break on a high and hope to continue the sides good form when cricket returns on January 14, a home game at Merton.
