AS the mercury continues to plummet and the snow season takes its place, Regional Roads Victoria has asked drivers to take extra care and be prepared for black ice, blizzards and fog.

Regional director (North East) Steve Bowmaker said drivers can play their part by ensuring their vehicles are properly equipped and in good condition.

“Check your tyre tread and pressure ahead of your journey, and test your lights and battery,” Mr Bowmaker said.

“Put anti-freeze in the radiator, pack sunglasses for snow glare and include an ice scraper for when you’re ready to leave the mountain."

Motorists are reminded that many Alpine roads will close as conditions change during winter.

“For safety’s sake, break up your journey at a roadside rest stop or at a town on the way to your destination," Mr Bowmaker said.

“Slow down in areas known for black ice. Signs will alert you to areas where it’s likely to be found, including near Ovens, Harrietville and Eurobin on the Great Alpine Road.”

All visitors to alpine resorts must carry snow chains and fit them when directed by authorities and those visiting Mount Hotham are reminded that diamond pattern snow chains are mandatory.
