FOR these local business owners, the 2020 ski season announcement was a huge relief.
Georgia Monsching and Ben Kaye have only recently taken over the running of Porepunkah Ski Hire from Georgia’s parents, after their 20 year stint.
“We officially took over on Queen’s Birthday weekend this year but we have both grown up skiing and have worked in the ski industry for the better part of the last 10 years,” Georgia said.
“We wanted to move back to the valley so when my parents decided to sell we thought it was the perfect opportunity.
“When we heard the ski season was going ahead it was a pretty huge relief for us and we were understandably ecstatic.
“Once we got over the excitement that we were allowed to open it really set in that we would have to make a lot of changes.
“Fortunately the Snowsports Industry of Australia and the Department of Health have been working together to draft up a solid set of procedures and COVID-safe practices to help protect our ski season.
“We were able to implement all of the procedures into our own day to day running of the business.”
The couple said they love what they do and couldn’t pick something they enjoy the most about the ski season.
“We love all aspects of the ski season, from skiing to the social aspects; it brings people together from all over,” Georgia said.
“We think the best thing about the snow is the fact that everyone can enjoy it, whether it's a week up on the hill or an afternoon at Mt Buffalo with the family, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”
Porepunkah Ski Hire offers everything from basic snow gear for first time skiers’ right through to brand new demo rental skis.
Georgia said the business has already had lots of enquiries for the opening of resorts and they are hoping to be quite busy, even with current restrictions.
“My advice would be to make sure everything is booked in advance, especially for this season and if anyone has any questions feel free to contact us,” she said.
“We hope everyone has a great season and we look forward to seeing you all in the shop.”
