Winter weather arrived over the past few days with the first significant snowfall, plus the snow resorts have commenced snowmaking.
The Snowy Mountains lived up to their name this past weekend with cold temperatures, snowfall, and the process of building a snow base at the resorts.
Thredbo, Charlotte Pass and Perisher were covered in white at stages, and the Perisher snow stake registered 3cm on Monday morning. While the snow will melt in most areas (a natural early-season occurrence), the process of cooling the ground and building the base starts from now.
The resorts will continue to make snow where temperatures allow as they approach the season opening on the June long weekend, starting on Saturday June 7.
The weather looks like a mixed bag in the coming week, but now is the time to plan for winter ahead.
